Assistant Camera | 2 Day Workshop | Part 1


Assistant Camera - 2 Day Workshop Part 1: use real professional equipment and real-world application of techniques and jobs (pulling focus, slating, marks, etc), and a basic understanding of lighting, filters, and coverage for edit, set etiquette, safety, and ninja teamwork. 

  • Saturday & Sunday, April 27th & 28th

  • 9:00am - 5:30pm both days

  • Film training requirement College 2 year or greater

Erick Castillo is a filmmaker and International Cinematographers Guild member. After attending the College of Santa Fe in 2005, he began working in the camera department, acquiring more than 65 feature, commercial and independent film credits. 

As a Film Loader and Camera Assistant, he has worked under 4 Oscar winning Directors of Photography along with many other notable productions like the Avengers and the TV series Longmire filmed in New Mexico.

As a filmmaker, Erick's most recent short film, Pareidolia, won the 2018 Best Drama award at the New Mexico filmmakers showcase.

He is excited to be working with the Stagecoach Foundation in their efforts to engage and inspire the next generation of New Mexico filmmakers.

Recommended student gear to bring: camera package and supporting accessories 

  • Follow focus

  • lenses- a small set of primes if available

  • media to record (cards)  to check playback on shots

  • onboard monitor- to watch playback 

  • head and tripod (please no sliders or stabilizers)

  • matte box and filters (if available)

  • canned air

  • tape measures 

  • Slate

  • Marking Tape

Day One of AC Workshop - Stagecoach Foundation

  • Running the Department 

  • Checking lenses (at prep or onset).

  • Safety first- Say Something!

  • Role as a Department Head and hierarchy

  • Camera Reports- purpose and filling one out correctly 

  • Onset behavior and expected responsibilities

  • Slating (common, end boards, slating more than one camera). Purpose and History of Slates.

  • Expendable list- ordering

  • Bags, cases, and carts

  • Keeping it clean in harsh environments

  • Camera Logs and notations

DAY TWO AC Workshop- StageCoach Foundation

  • Applying what we learned from Day One

  • 1st and 2nd AC working as a team, techniques, and dependability

  • 1st AC techniques and Timesavers

  • 2ND AC job techniques and timesavers

  • Marking actors, cars and horses 

  • Using Slate as a Focus Tool

  • Using landmarks for focus

  • “Forget the Monitor” pulling old school and using your environment for sharp shots
